The state Duma has approved the postponement of the presidential elections in 2018 on the day of annexation of Crimea

Deputies of the state Duma in the first reading has approved several bills providing for the transfer of presidential elections in 2018 from 11 to 18 March. In addition, the majority of deputies voted for the abolition of absentee ballots, instead of which will create a different system of voting not at the place of registration.

Under current law, the Russian presidential election must be held on the second Sunday of March. However, the package of amendments provides the option of transferring voting day if this Sunday is a combined, post-holiday or working day due to the transfer of the holidays.

In 2018 11 March will be post-holiday day, therefore, as proposed, elections will take March 18. This day also marks the anniversary of the annexation of Crimea to Russia.

Recall that the bill, which allows you to move the date of presidential elections in the state Duma was introduced in early March by senators Andrew Clisham and Anatoly Shirokov. This idea was supported by the speaker of the state Duma Vyacheslav Volodin and the head of the CEC, Ella Pamfilova – she explained his position that the election commissions will have more time to prepare elections.
