The Senate approved the candidacy of the new Minister of internal Affairs
The office was headed by a former lobbyist David Bernhardt
Predecessor Bernhardt – Ryan Zinke – resigned in December of last year. The head of the Ministry, oversees, in particular, the protection of Federal and tribal land and water resources. The Ministry plays a key role in attempts by Donald trump to increase production of coal, natural gas and oil in the United States.
For the candidate of Bernhardt voted mostly Republican. Democrats expressed concern that the new Minister, because of his past lobbying, will favour the production of minerals and energy, and not to engage in conservation.
Questions to Bernhardt emerged and Republican senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, representing the state of Florida. They are concerned plans of the Ministry for oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic oceans. Authorities in southern coastal States are afraid of possible oil spills that harm tourism.
However, Rubio, and Scott voted to approve the nomination of Bernhardt.
The Democrats insisted on the inadmissibility of this appointment, as, in their opinion, the new Minister supports close ties with representatives of industries under the control of the Department.
