Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy (Mariano Rajoy) has given on Wednesday the Catalan leadership eight days on the rejection of the application for independence. Otherwise, he threatened to suspend the actions of the political autonomy of Catalonia and take control of the region directly.

Such a move Prime Minister threatens to exacerbate the confrontation between Madrid and the North-Eastern region, and brings the country to the crisis that erupted in Spain in 1981.

The leader of Catalonia Carles Pujdeme (Carles Puigdemont) issued a symbolic Declaration of independence from Spain, but immediately suspended it, and called on Madrid to negotiate.

“This morning, the Cabinet has asked the Catalan government to confirm that it declared independence, in order to avoid confusion,” Rajoy said in a televised address after the Cabinet meeting, assembled on the issue of Catalonia.

The stakes are high. If Catalonia, which has its own language and culture disconnect, then Spain will lose a fifth of its economy and more than a quarter of exports.
