The judge ruled that the artist under the name 5Pointz, which makes graffiti on the old buildings of long island, will receive compensation in the amount of 6.7 million dollars for the fact that his work was destroyed.

The artist finished the drawings on the walls of the house in 2013, the year the building was demolished for the construction of luxury apartments. The author sued and won compensation for the fact that his graffiti was destroyed, along with dilapidated buildings.

U.S. district judge Frederic Block in Brooklyn noted that 45 of the 49 paintings were recognized as works of art, and then “wrongfully and intentionally destroyed by a ruthless developer”. His decision is based on the law about the visual rights 1990 that protects the rights of street artists, even if someone else owns the physical media of their work.

The judge said that before they disappeared, graffiti became attractive for tourists, attracting daily thousands of spectators. They also become the backdrop for the movie “Now you see me”.
