None of last year’s semifinalists of the men’s and women’s competitions the Australian Open not even reached the quarterfinals of the tournament in Melbourne in 2019.
The semifinalists AO 2018:
- Marin Cilic, Kyle Edmund, Hyun Jung, Roger Federer (champion);
- Simona Halep, Angelique Kerber, Alice Mertens, Caroline Wozniacki (champion);
Quarterfinal pairs AO-2019:
- Novak Djokovic – Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic – Luc Puja, Roberto Bautista-Agut – Stefanos Zizipus, Rafael Nadal – Francis Tiavo;
- Serena Williams – Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina – Naomi Osaka, Petra Kvitova – Ashleigh Barty, Daniel Collins Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova;
Note that only three of last year’s quarter-finalists made it to this stage and in 2019: Nadal, Svitolina and Pliskova.
Recall that Svitolina can become the first racket of the world for another Australian Open.
