NATO – Russia: the threat of “war” over the Baltic sea

Author: Vitaly V. Kuzmin.

Increased the international tension was the trigger for the “war of nerves” along the Russian air and Maritime borders. Ukraine “took over” the South, the black sea-Azov sea direction. But NATO members and their allies have focused their efforts on the Baltic sea.

On 28 January, as reported in the Ministry of defence “means control of the airspace were recorded approaching the Russian border the purpose over neutral waters of the Baltic sea. To intercept in the air was raised fighter su-27 from the composition of the active-duty air defense forces. The crew of the Russian fighter approached to a safe distance to the air object, identified it as a reconnaissance aircraft P-8A Poseidon, the U.S. air force (by the way, designed not only for the detection and destruction of submarines of the enemy – “MK”). And then returned safely to their base”.

All in all, as estimated in Ministry of defense, only over the last decade of prospecting activity along the borders of Russia were 19 foreign aircraft. And intercept and escort foreign military aircraft near the borders twice raised the fighters of the Russian HQs. Including to intercept the su-27 fighter jet of the Swedish spy plane “Gulf stream”, approaching the Russian borders without turning on the transponder (electronic recognition system “friend or foe”). While a few days earlier in violation of its airspace Sweden has accused our country. A couple of days to intercept two Russian su-27 over the Gulf of Finland was raised and the Finnish fighter.

What are the consequences unfolding before our eyes escalation of this, I may say, “the plan-interception”, and how it is carried out the interception of foreign aircraft, “MK” explained a leading military expert, Director of the Centre for strategic conjuncture Ivan KONOVALOV:

– As for the definition of “interception”, that different countries mean different concepts. For example, the British with the Americans call interception easy maintenance for its aircraft “stranger” with the aim of observing its flight. But sometimes, when NATO planes close to the borders of Russia, and then they have to drive away. This is also the intercept. If violated airspace, the first offender warning and require an immediate landing on the nearest airfield, and if he does not obey, the decision of how to proceed. Up to the hard way to stop him is to shoot down. The right to defend its airspace have every state.

The escalation of the air “war of nerves” between Russia on the one hand, and NATO and its allies, on the other, according to experts, is obvious. However, more correctly, according to him, would not talk about the exchange of “interceptions,” and on strengthening the activities of the Americans and their allies at our borders:

– Why is this happening, of course. Flying their scouts aims to open our borders. As well as the range of equipment installed on them is very large, then “scan” the situation, they can easily and from the comfort of neutral zones. And what we have to do in this situation? Rules governing actions involving civil aircraft, but the military — no. Here we are trying to fend them off or intercept. However, let us not forget: if Russian planes follow past the borders of NATO countries and their allies, while not violating their airspace, they raise such a noise that just hold on!

The situation is very dangerous, warns expert: the number, that and look, can go in quality. And then will not find anyone:

– “War of nerves” is very dangerous because of its unpredictability. And especially in the area of the Baltic sea. God forbid, some of their aircraft will crash into our territory! This can lead to very serious consequences, especially if it is not a scout, but a well-armed military plane with a supply of missiles.

But the collision of their planes in the air with strangers, it seems, can not be afraid: as the statistics shows, more often there is an encounter between the, – said our interlocutor.

Alas! This is the only thing that is comforting.
