In a variant of this formula, proposed by scientists, takes into consideration such factors as the rate of birth of celestial bodies within the habitable zone around the parent star (i.e. the distance at which water could remain in liquid form, not freezing and not evaporating), and the gamma ray bursts of this star. The calculations showed that within a radius of ten kiloparsecs from the Sun, i.e. within the milky way, almost certainly has to be at least one civilization that have committed enough to enter in contact with humans means of communication .

The equation allowing to estimate the probability of the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations based on the seven criteria, the astrophysicist Frank Drake proposed in 1960. His formula Drake wanted not so much to prove or disprove the possibility of the existence of aliens, as to demonstrate that the search for the answer to the question about their presence is necessary to highlight specific aspects that affect this probability.

It should be noted that the Drake equation and its various modifications have been criticized by various scholars. The main reason for this is the fact that most of the parameters of this formula can be called only on the basis of unsubstantiated assumptions, which has led many to question the reliability of the result.
