The world heritage site “Saint Sophia Cathedral and Kiev-Pechersk Lavra” is in danger of falling in 2019 in the “black list” of UNESCO for the illegal construction in the monastery, construction of which continues today.
This was stated by social activist, lawyer Marina Solovyova, UKRINFORM reported.
Today on the territory of Kyiv-Pechersk reserve is under construction. From 2011 to 2014, the Ministry of culture gave permission for the repair and reconstruction work. But under the guise of these works of new construction, is 20 thousand square meters, and it is very large figures that just scare

In particular, today in the monastery building growers, the economic case, the four-storey building under the guise of retaining walls, a new large-scale the bell tower. Ongoing construction in the buffer zone Lavra and St. Sophia Cathedral. This area needs to be expanded in 2019 – the issue will be considered at session of UNESCO in June. It also suggests that Ukraine does not follows the guidelines of the UNESCO Convention, which Ukraine ratified in 1988.
If on site or in the buffer zone of the object needs to be some restructuring or a large building, it should be in advance warned the world heritage Committee of UNESCO
At the same time the representative “Andreevskoe-Landscape initiatives” Irina Nikiforova reminded that annually Ukraine has to provide national report for UNESCO. Last year’s report, she said, were rigged. Yes, sent to the world heritage Committee version did not include paragraph of the original report, previously published on the website of the Ministry of culture. In this paragraph it was said about the controversial new buildings, in particular the construction in the buffer zone of Sophia of Kyiv.
“Another report that should be sent this year, can contain, in particular, assurances that today on the territory of the reserve “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” is not scheduled reconstruction work that may have a detrimental effect on its inherent characteristics and may adversely affect its outstanding universal value,” – said Nikiforov.
She added that the report may not recall that we have built 16 new facilities at the reserve.
