In the hands of Russia: US fears of early elections in Ukraine

The unstable situation in Ukraine may lead to early presidential and parliamentary elections, said the Director of national intelligence Daniel Coates. In his opinion, Russia can use it to “undermine the Pro-Western orientation of Kiev.”

The Ukrainian people are dissatisfied with the pace of reforms, declining living standards and growing corruption, said Coates at the hearing before the special Committee on intelligence of the Senate of the U.S. Congress.

All of these factors, coupled with the political polarization of society can lead to early presidential elections, warned the American intelligence.

“Ukraine remains a risk of political upheaval, Russia is likely to use to undermine Pro-Western orientation of Kiev,” said Coates.

In addition, said the scout, this state of Affairs into the hands of the opposition, which will try to take advantage of the situation in society in order to weaken Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and the Pro-government coalition before the election.

Presidential and parliamentary elections should be held in Ukraine in 2019. A number of politicians required to hold elections ahead of schedule, but also advocate the impeachment of Poroshenko. The Ukrainian leader has repeatedly stated that early elections will slow down the progress of reforms and destabilisateur the situation in the country.
