Bartholomew signed the Tomos of autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on Saturday, January 5, at 12:40, signed the Tomos of autocephaly of the United Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

The ceremony of signing the Tomos was held in the Patriarchal Church of St. George in the territory of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul.

With the signing of the Tomos for Ukraine officially completed the procedure of obtaining Church independence.

Note that in the temple there is the official delegation of Ukraine headed by President Petro Poroshenko and the head of the DNC, Metropolitan Epiphanius.

Celebrations associated with providing Ukraine Thomas, will continue the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul two days – 5 and 6 January.

Tomorrow, January 6, in the Patriarchal Church of St. George at 8:30 divine Liturgy will take place, which will jointly send the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Metropolitan Epiphanios. After it the head of the PCU will receive the Tomos.

What is Tomos?
Tomos is a unique Church document. Release it when the Church wants to provide the actual independence – autocephaly. Occasionally Tomos issued on matters relating to the provisions of the Christian faith, most often it concerns Church order.

How to create a Unified local Church in Ukraine?9 October in Istanbul began a three-day meeting of the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. On October 10 the meeting of the clergy heard the report of the envoys of Patriarch Bartholomew (exarchs), who almost spent a month in Ukraine. In particular, the clergy went on the Ukrainian churches, talked with priests. Is based on the results of their report, Ukraine was granted permission to establish one national Ukrainian Church.

December 15, during the Unifying Council of Orthodox bishops announced the unification of the Ukrainian churches in a local independent Church. Its official name sounds like – a Ukrainian national Autocephalous Orthodox Church. A Primate of a Unified local Orthodox Church became the Metropolitan of Pereiaslav and Belotserkovsky Epiphanius. His candidacy was supported by the majority of bishops at the unity Cathedral in Kiev. Cathedral of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine will be the Michael’s Cathedral and not Sophia as previously reported.
